It was another hot, muggy, stormy month in Westfield with crews working towards demolition of the slow sand filters and complete critical infrastructure to keep the plant running during demolition. Some of this summer’s progress is obvious in the landscape, other developments are hidden underground. Above, crews are removing soil from the top of slow sand filter #18.

Tie-in #4, part 1 is complete!
Tie-ins are allowing existing treatment to continue during construction by re-routing critical pipes around the construction site. Crews worked overnight on July 28th to complete tie-in #4 and start the flow of water. The work and operation of the plant was closely managed hour by hour between SWSC plant operators and the contractors.
Walsh’s crew worked for days to prep the piping by replacing bolts, dewatering, and cleaning the pipe. The plan went smoothly, water is flowing, so all the hard work and coordination paid off.

The new chemical injection vault is also starting to take shape. In July, crews placed rebar and built wall forms for the poured concrete.
Once the forms were stripped and tie-in #4, part one was completed, crews started removing piles and backfilling the excavation areas.
