This summer, the Commission kept busy—not just building a new water plant, but also laying the foundation for the next generation of water professionals through our Pipeline Program.
Designed to inspire and equip future leaders in water operations and engineering, the Pipeline Program gave interns a front-row seat to the construction of our new facility. Through job-shadowing experiences across Commission departments, including, with the Water Operations and Engineering teams, interns gained hands-on exposure to the systems and people that keep our community’s water flowing.
The interns visited our existing plant and lab, gaining a deeper understanding of how water is treated, tested, and delivered every day. Interns also got to peak at the construction site, observing the scale of the project and the dedication of the teams behind it.
Beyond the technical experience, interns also had a chance to engage directly with the community. At the Forest Park Farmers Market, interns staffed our mobile water station, sharing updates with residents about the new plant and other water and sewer initiatives.
Several interns also presented project updates during our recent Leadership Summit, showcasing their insights and enthusiasm for the work ahead.
As the Commission advances these major infrastructure upgrades, like the new water treatment plant, developing the next generation of skilled water professionals to serve our community is more important than ever.
The Commission’s workforce development initiatives, like the Pipeline Program, connect young people to rewarding, long-lasting careers that support daily life, protect public health, and safeguard the environment.

Building this next generation of water workforce professionals helps ensure we have the talent needed to staff the new treatment plant and maintain our water and wastewater systems for decades to come.
